The most important rule to be learnt before stepping out onto a Gaelic pitch; is that whilst in possesion of the ball, you must bounce or solo (kick) the ball to yourself every four steps. You also can't bounce the ball more than once in sequence, however soloing is allowed to be performed as many times as the player wishes to.

Hand passing is another important skill to master. Instead of passing using both hands, like in netball, the ball is passed by striking with one hand whilst the ball rests on the other. There are two types: fist pass and a hand pass.

In order to avoid an opponent, or to create space, a feint or side-step is used. This needs to be well-timed in order to work well but is an effective skill to have.

Catching can be used to recieve a pass or to intercept a pass by the opposition. High catches are more usually used during an interception, with body catches being a more reliable way to catch passes.
